Sprout + Watermelon = Joy

by Andrew Caldwell on August 4, 2010

Baby Daddy here.  I have to share this entertaining update with the world.  So our little sprout has a ridiculous hankering for watermelon and in turn, my lovely Anju has an equally insatiable appetite for it.  I’ve heard a million stories about preggo women and their random cravings, but to see it first hand is astounding.  So the other day I wanted to make her eyes light up like a Christmas tree so while she was up taking a shower and getting ready, I sprang into watermelon ninja action.  I sliced and diced and cut a whole 10 pound watermelon into delicious bite sized chunks, popped it into tupperware and hid it in our lunch bag to take to the studio.  This was going to be the surprise at lunch time…She was going to love me long time.  So I cleaned the counters, washed the cutting board and knife, buried the evidence, even emptied the trashcan outside.  I was free and clear, surprise on the way.  My lovely comes walking downstairs, and as she gets to the bottom of the stairs, she says, “Thanks for cutting the watermelon”…  “WHAT?  How did you know?” I replied.  “I smelled it upstairs.”  Now look, I understand that watermelon has a nice smell to it when you cut it.  My fingers are permanently stained pink from cutting so many this past 5 months.  But this watermelon smell had to travel 20 yards, around corners, deal with the turbulent air from the open sliding glass door, go up a flight of stairs, under a closed door and into a room with a fan blowing.  The only smell known to man, capable of this kind of travel, is bacon.  Delicious sweet bacon.  Not a dainty fruit smell.  People, this stuff is like CRACK to her.  I could not believe the sensitivity of this preggo nose.  Wow.  Now I’m thinking we should take her to France, kick the pigs out of the field and have Anju sniff for buried Truffles.  Let’s capitalize on this amazing gift!  And skip the watermelon/black people jokes.  We’ve already exhausted all of them…  Daddy out…

LOL…that’s awesome! Oh and Andrew i walked into my parent’s house once and told them it smelled and Dad had me “sniff it out”. LOL he follwed me like you would a dog until i walked thru the living room, kitchen, family room, into the garage (which has a fire proof door that was closed) and showed him that the wet dish cloth sitting in the laundry basket smelled. Gotta love the prego nose! ;)
